Support for Success in English and Beyond
Course Descriptions:
Both Power English I and II are courses where students with demonstrated needs in core skills receive targeted instruction from teachers trained and equipped to facilitate a growth-driven classroom. They are taught in conjunction with English I or English II and are designed to give students a solid foundation for success in English courses (and all courses, by extension) for the remainder of high school and the next stage of life.
Curriculum Guides:
Both courses follow a flexible structure that allows the teacher to tailor assignments, activities, and even units to the needs of the particular students in a specific section of the course, while keeping a watchful eye on opportunities to link student learning to what is happening in the students' English course. As courses engaged in Standards-Referenced Grading, both have a set of curriculum scales used for reporting student achievement in the class, and those are located at the link below. Power English I and II support English courses; they do not supplant them, and the focus in both courses is on supporting students in mastering the foundational skills required for success in English I, II, and beyond.

All ELA teachers now have a premium account through NoRedInk.com. Please see the attached pacing guide that identifies activities and assessments in NRI that connect with each learning target from your curriculum guide. This tool is an incredible resource for grammar instruction but should not take the place of strong in-person lessons from you, their teacher. Students should have opportunities to engage in authentic practice through writing. Log-in Info: Teachers Students Additional ResourcesPower English I is primarily supported by the 2012 Holt McDougal Literature Grade 9 textbook and is supplemented by the 2015 Prentice Hall Writing Coach Grade 9 textbook and the Saddlier Vocabulary for Success Grade 9 workbook. Additional resources, as compiled by DMPS teachers, are listed below. Power English II is similarly supported by the 2012 Holt McDougal Literature Grade 10 and 2015 Prentice Hall Writing Coach Grade 10 textbooks.
The Achieve3000 Literacy Intervention software is available for use in both courses and has its own dedicated page for resources, found along the top of your screen by hovering over the "More..." menu. Power English I and II teachers are considered "Intervention Teachers" for the purposes of determining which resources to access on that page. If you are a Power English teacher with a terrific resource for your fellow teachers that you would like to share, click the "Submit Resources" button at the bottom of the page! |
