What Modules are we teaching?
For the 2022/2023 school year, we will be covering teaching Modules 1, 3, and 4 in each grade level. Pacing guidance for each grade level is included in the comprehensive Guide.
How do students access the texts?
Students will have continued access to all required texts through MackinVia. Physical texts should remain in the classroom. Buildings are responsible for replacing lost or damaged physical texts.
Will we continue to receive printed materials and what all is included?
Leaders have been provided with information on how to order necessary copies of Teacher Guides and Student Workbooks. Because anchor texts are housed inside the student workbook, these will continue to be printed per student.
Teacher Guides will be provided for new staff. If you have lost or damaged your guide, inform your administrator and a new one can be ordered from Print Shop using building funds.
Material requests must go through your building administrator and office manager. Only requests made through the appropriate channel can be processed. The curriculum coordinator has no power to order or authorize additional printing or material purchase.

What are the expectations for using Canvas?
The Canvas resources were created to teach in a virtual and hybrid world. Many activities were adapted due to the highly collaborative structure of the EL curriculum and limitations of a virtual format. Those Canvas resources will continue to exist and be available in Commons. Missing Modules from 2020/2021 will be updated by August.
There is no expectation of continued use of Canvas, however, it does provide an opportunity to support our learners at home as we increase our expectations of academic work outside of the classroom. Ease of providing assessments or entrance tickets through Canvas can provide students with more immediate feedback and speed grading for you.

May teachers construct open-ended questions to accompany the multiple-choice assessment?
No. EL provides specific guidance that only the assessments should be captured as part of a students grade. Until we have experienced what this looks like in person, we will not want to deviate from that guidance. We have a multitude of student work and practice that we could lean on in the event we need to include something additional in a student's grade report to indicate they have met or exceeded proficiency.
May I alter a Module Assessment?
No. This is especially true of the writing prompts. While you may provide clarity around what a question is asking for, you may not construct an entirely new prompt.
Why are we repeatedly grading the same writing assignment? By the time they get to the assessment, they've already written and revised it.
This allows students to engage in the entire writing process. We are more accustomed to grading students' first drafts instead of allowing them to perfect and grow in the writing process before taking something for a grade. This routine of partner or group writing, drafting, revision, and completion helps students gain stamina in the writing process and should result in stronger pieces of evidence. It may take time to help students understand this cycle and the need for repeated writing but it will be worth it.
How many questions will students need to get "correct" to achieve and NM, PT, AT, or ET?
There is no mathematical formula that equates to a student demonstrating proficiency. Using the IC Reporting Guidance documents, our scales and success criteria, and EL rubrics and checklists, teachers will holistically determine based on that modules expectations. Reporting Guidance documents are available for each grade level and identify what learning targets are assessed and when. They can be found on the main middle school resource hub page.
What does an ET or Level 4 look like in EL?
That has not yet been articulated. Many of the wonderful Level 4 activities from our past may have, in fact, been grade level expectations. What it takes to truly exceed proficiency on each of these standards through the EL curriculum will become clearer as we implement. Students can certainly earn an ET or higher than 3 on assessments if they have demonstrated a clear mastery of the skill and applied it in new and complex ways.
